lot to do with mitt romney's strong debate showing last night. eamon javers is in washington with the latest reaction to last night's action. eamon. >> hi, bill. the reviews are in for last night's presidential debate. not so good for barack obama. definitely good for mitt romney. a lot of folks concluding that romney had one of the stronger debate performances last night in presidential debating history, at least in recent memory. that's not good news for the president. you can tell how both these campaigns feel about their performance last night based on what they're doing today. we have not seen mitt romney out in front of television cameras so far today, but president obama hosted a rally in colorado today, giving him a chance to have almost a do over from last night's performance. take a listen. >> when i got on to the stage, i met this very spirited fellow who claimed to be mitt romney. but it couldn't have been mitt romney because the real mitt romney has been running around the country for the last year promising $5 trillion in tax cuts that favor the wealthy. the fellow on st

the big debate tomorrow night between the president and mitt romney. i want to ask you about politics and investing. first, what do you think about this market? what are you hearing from clients? you think we're going to continue to see chasing of high beta stocks or has this market gotten tired? >> our clients are scared. what we're hearing first and fare mo foremost is a lot of uncertainty. is europe going to melt down? are we going to have a fiscal clif cliff in the u.s.? is israel going to bomb snooirn on top of that, they're hearing the dysfunctional politics from the u.s. election. they're hearing president obama does not have the answer. they hear from the other side that neither does mitt romney. they're scared. so many of our clients have actually been on the sidelines. this has been a relatively low volume rally. i think it still has legs. i think multiples are reasonable and there's still room to go. >> that's what we have pondered here lately, dick. is this sort of stealth rally, as i called it before -- here we sit near 5 1/2 rear hiyear high the market, even as

romney is doing better because he had a better outcome in the debate. i think most people still recognize that he has a lot to do. remember, romney has to do two things. one, he has to convince that president obama has not delivered. second, he has to convince the american people he can deliver. so he has to do it both things. there's still some heavy sledding for him on both fronts. in terms of the market, i think that over the next few weeks and months we're basically going to be driven not only by the political process but whether we get data that confirms the handoff from central bank action to fundamentals will happen. otherwise, this wedge that the central bank have created between valuations of fundamentals cannot be sustained forever. fundamentals have got to start coming up towards valuations, otherwise valuations will come down. >> mohammed, thank you so much for joining us today. >> thank you, michelle. >> all right. we've got about 51 minutes before the closing bell. the nasdaq is lower by nearly 14 points. >> don't go anywhere. there's still a lot more ahead on this busy frid

legal protection. >>> just hours before the first presidential debate tonight, mitt romney is raising eyebrows by getting more specific than ever about his tax plans. eamon javers is in washington with details. >> i should say the the romney campaign e-mailed me this morning to point out that this proposal that romney floated out there yesterday is not a specific proposal. just kicking around some ideas. but the idea he kicked around was an interesting one. capping tax deduction at about $17,000. that is, you would have a bucket of tax deductions, and you could fill it with your mortgage deduction or other things. so who would this help, and who would it hurt? here's the hypothetical type of guy that it would hurt. this is a hypothetical, but if you're a hot-shot young lawyer making $200,000 in new york city, you've got probably a high mortgage payment relative to your salary. you're paying high state and local taxes. if you made charitable deductions, this is a proposal that might hurt you more than it helps you. so who would benefit under this scenario that romney floated out there
